The 175-foot Hadlow Tower, also known as ‘May’s Folly’, is the largest Victorian Gothic tower in Britain, topped with a 40-foot octagonal lantern.

During the Second World War, it was used as a watchtower by the Home Guard and Royal Observer Corps. It was originally a part of Hadlow Castle, an 18th century Strawberry-Hill style Gothic country house which was demolished after WWII.

Originally built in 1840 by architect George Ledwell Taylor, part of a grand castle in the Romantic Gothic style, built for industrlalist Walter Barton May. During the Second World War, it was used as a watchtower by the Home Guard and Royal Observer Corps.

The castle was demolished after WWII for building materials: only the tower and some of the gardens were spared. Bernard Hailstone RP, a renowned portrait painter (of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Chirchill amongst others), purchased the Tower and the remaining courtyard buildings, ultimately saving them.

Converted into a residence in the 70s, the tower fell into disuse and disrepair. It was fully restored in 2013 after receiving £4.5 million in grants from the National Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage.
