Guildford Manor is an English Tudor Estate...in Pennsylvania [Video]
This property is listed for $8,900,000 by Franz Rabauer of Kurfiss Sotheby's International Realty.
It may be hard for you to believe that this English Tudor Estate is located in Pennsylvania. Guildford Manor was built in 1925, although parts of it date as far back as the 12th century, such as the great stone slab floors from Warwick Priory in London.
It was built by George Elkins, who had inherited his father's vast fortune created in railways, oil, gas and tobacco. In 1915, George took a trip to England where he visited his friend, the Duke of Sutherland at Sutton Place in Surrey. His time at the estate inspired him so much that he decided to build his own Tudor estate modelled after Sutton Place back home in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. The town is located just half an hour from Central Philadelphia and 90 minutes drive from Manhattan.
The property took over 10 years to complete, importing architectural elements from 16th century Tudor estates in England to be incorporated into Guildford Manor, named after the town where Sutton Place is located.
Robert McGoodwin led the construction of the property. The substructure was built of reinforced concrete meant to stand for hundreds of years with the imported architectural components reassembled on site.
The living room dates from the 15th century, taken from Cassiobury House, where Elizabeth I is said to have visited, marked by a stained glass window bearing her Tudor Rose emblem. Much like Sutton Place, Guildford Manor was built for lavish living and entertaining, with a large entry hall, grand reception room, and an intimate panelled library perfect for fireside chats.
Set on a private parkland of 18 acres, the scenic property has woodland trails, terraced gardens, a landscaped amphitheatre, and pool. The 7-bedroom, 7+5 bath home has been completely updated for 21st century living with amenities like elevators, 13 wood burning fireplaces, a 4-car garage, a wine cellar, and spa.
