Luxurious Ski Chalet in the Italian Alps
Nestled high above the picturesque village of Cervinia, Italy, stands an extraordinary ski chalet that has recently graced the real estate market as the most expensive listing in the Italian Alps.
Named La Fenice, Italian for "the phoenix," this chalet symbolizes a rebirth from the ashes of a dilapidated structure, inviting discerning buyers into the lap of luxury.
The story of La Fenice begins in 1936 when it was originally constructed as a stone-built villa, capturing the hearts of those who appreciated its 360-degree views of the Matterhorn, the Italian Alps to the south, and the Swiss Alps to the North—with no property overlooking it.
However, it wasn't until 2015 that the chalet found its savior in the form of John Harrison, a former partner at a London-based finance house and an avid skier, who stumbled upon the dilapidated building during a skiing trip and purchased the "rather nice ruin".
Harrison hired Italian architect Mariapia Bettiol, who specializes in high-altitude luxury projects like chalets and hotels, to oversee the five-year renovation.
They preserved the exterior's historical charm while creating a luxurious interior with amenities like a gym, multimedia room, wine cellar, and spa facilities, including an indoor pool, Hammam, and treatment rooms, as well as an outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking the Matterhorn.
The 12,917 sq ft property spans six floors, accessible by a lift, and boasts seven en-suite bedrooms, some with private balconies that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The interior is adorned with panelled reception rooms featuring open fireplaces, adding a touch of warmth and charm to the elegant ambiance.
La Fenice is not merely a residence; it's a lifestyle statement as one of the few luxury chalets in the Italian Alps— the area is connected by cable car to the popular ski area of Zermatt in Switzerland as well.
